Trade learners need more than information. They need opportunities to make decisions, use equipment, recognise hazards and understand what can happen when something goes wrong.
Yet access to workshops, machinery and individual practice time can be limited. For new or hesitant learners, the fear of making a mistake can also become a barrier to participation.
We saw an opportunity to create a safer, more engaging way for learners to prepare before entering the physical workshop.
Our early testing confirmed that immersion alone was not enough. Learners wanted clear objectives, meaningful tasks and guidance that helped them understand why their decisions mattered.
They did not simply want to watch a demonstration. They wanted to explore, solve problems, practise workshop processes and see the consequences of their choices.
ELN Game Studio developed Tradiecraft®, an immersive engineering workshop where learners build practical knowledge through experience.
Inside Tradiecraft®, learners work alongside supervisors Bill and Olive, with robot TR-Dee providing guidance along the way. They complete realistic activities involving workshop safety, fabrication machinery, tools, measurements, planning and problem-solving.
Learners can practise before working with physical equipment, repeat activities without embarrassment and build familiarity at their own pace. Trainers can then use the experience to support discussion, demonstration and practical workshop learning.
Tradiecraft® is designed to complement training delivery. It does not replace the trainer or the physical workshop. It helps learners arrive better prepared to participate in both.
Tradiecraft® has been shaped through three rounds of user testing involving participants aged from 12 to 82, including experienced tradespeople, new learners and people with no previous virtual reality experience.

The result is not a static simulation. Tradiecraft® is a learning environment that has evolved by watching how real people respond, where they hesitate and what helps them move forward.
Tradiecraft® learning content is mapped to relevant units of competency and independently reviewed for compliance with the 2025 Standards for RTOs.
It can support schools, TAFEs, RTOs and industry organisations seeking a more engaging way to introduce workshop concepts, prepare learners for practical training and bring difficult-to-access experiences into the classroom.

Freighter Group was transforming its manufacturing operations through significant investment in advanced automation. Its new smart-factory environment included automated welding, laser cutting, bending, material handling and surface-preparation systems.
Introducing this technology required more than installing new equipment. Employees needed clear, practical training that connected the operation of each system with the company’s production processes and workplace requirements.

Australia’s expanding wind-energy industry needed a defined vocational pathway for people entering wind-turbine blade inspection, maintenance and repair roles.Blade technicians require specialist skills in composite materials, inspection, repairs, workplace safety and working in demanding environments. Before this initiative, Australia did not have a dedicated apprenticeship pathway for this occupation.
ELN contributed to the development of the learning and assessment resources for Federation TAFE’s MEM31119 Certificate III in Engineering – Composites Trade. The qualification was contextualised for wind-turbine blade technicians and designed to develop practical capability in areas including:
The three-year apprenticeship created Australia’s first defined vocational pathway into wind-turbine blade inspection, maintenance and repair.It also created opportunities for existing tradespeople to move into the renewable-energy sector while developing transferable composite skills relevant to the wind, aerospace, marine and manufacturing industries.The apprenticeship is delivered by Federation TAFE through the Asia Pacific Renewable Energy Training Centre at its Ballarat campus. Federation University describes the program as Australia’s first defined pathway for blade repair technicians.
